Relationship issues can cause such a heavy emotional toll, it leaves individuals feeling adrift in a sea of turmoil. The strain of unresolved conflicts, communication breakdowns, and subsequent resentment can lead to profound feelings of sadness, anxiety, and frustration. It's not uncommon for couples to experience a sense of isolation, as the emotional distance between them grows wider. These challenges can permeate every aspect of life, impacting one's self-esteem, work, and overall well-being making it difficult to even seek couples counseling.
At Family Matters Counseling, I understand the profound impact of relationship issues and am here to provide a safe and supportive space where couples can begin the healing process, rebuild connections, and find their way back to emotional harmony and fulfillment. I use Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) which identifies maladaptive patterns in couples and focuses on replacing those patterns with more emotionally secure patterns.
You may feel your relationship is too far gone to fix. Trust might have vanished and disdain has set in. It is not too late, though! I begin couples counseling or marital therapy by separating the problem from the person and seeing how both may be contributing to it. I seek to show both perspectives while teaching differentiation so love and trust can be built back in as two individuals, each with unique gifts, bring themselves back into the relationship.
Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy has been shown as one of the most effective modalities of treatment because couples learn to adjust the pattern instead of placing blame on the person. This has been instrumental in my own marriage and know that it can be extremely useful in yours as well.
Relationship Life Therapy is unlike any other couple's therapy modality out there. RLT was designed to empower the latent and bring down the blatant. The focus is on changing knee-jerk reactions and transforming them into thoughtful, loving, and measured responses or instruction. Something that is not readily taught in our culture in relationships.
As a trained RLT therapist, my goal is to help you find your voice and learn how to move from adaptive childhood responses of fight, flight, or fix into the pre-frontal cortex of the brain. This area of the brain is responsible for executive functioning, logic, and patience and is sometimes likened to the wise adult part of us by RLT therapists. Tapping into the wise adult part of us can be more difficult as it seems as the adaptive child part of us is often hard-wired and subconscious. I help you to take your "adaptive child's sticky fingers off of the wheel" and move the wise adult into the driver seat as Terry Real (the creator of RLT) has famously said.
RLT is also one of the few couple's therapy modalities that incorporates trauma work into the session. Rather than separating the partners to work on trauma separately, the practitioner engages in different forms of trauma work right in front of the other partner. This increases understanding, empathy, and compassion. What better way to understand what your partner may truly need by experiencing a little bit of what they have gone through.
Lastly, Relational Life Therapy is known for its simple, applicable, and real-life skills that will bring actual change to the relationship. The idea of living in an ecological system underpins the ways each partner teaches the other what they need to thrive in that system.
Since finding RLT, I have real hope for all of the couples that may cross my path who are open to this modality of therapy.
